I Like Big Knits

I own two jumpers. A distressed, black and white striped one by Ann Demeulemeester and a distressed, black and white striped one from Killstar. The next jumper I buy will probably be distressed and striped too. Maybe I’ll choose red and black next time. So as you can see, knitwear is one place in my wardrobe where I’m not in the slightest bit adventurous.

But sometimes knitwear comes along that makes me imagine a day where perhaps I could meandre out of my distressed, striped comfort zone. That day came when I discovered the glorious, candy coloured creations by Hope Macaulay.

Hope Macaulay is a luxury and bespoke fashion designer based in Northern Ireland. She creates large expressive collaged paintings and transforms them into prints, combined with carefully constructed detailed beadings and playful garment designs. Hope’s colourful colossal knits are handmade from 100% jumbo merino wool, a high quality, natural and sustainable material. Just from using her hands, Hope develops unique and exuberant chunky knitwear pieces. Her creations are not a representation of reality but a world in which you may find in your dreams, inspired by her fascination with the mind, distortion, reality and surrealism. Hope Macaulay garments are wearable pieces of art, that are bold and vivid experiences, each telling a dream-like story.

I could certainly be swung towards one of those hugely oversized affairs.

Practical? No. But when your jumper looks like knitted candy floss, who cares?
