Eros And Boy

The concept of gender has become far more fluid than it ever has been. Young people are actively seeking to question ideas of gender and what it means to be male or female. Whilst a lot of people are jumping on the bandwagon and paying lip service to this by simply adding pronouns on their Instagram profile pages to get more followers, some people are genuinely invested in this new way to look at gender.

The fashion industry has always approached gender in this way though. As an industry, self-expression is key to the exploration and understanding fashion. We currently have, and have had, so many amazing characters in fashion who pay no heed to the conventional ‘rules’ of style and who should wear what.

Goushuai Wang creates menswear which serves to question what masculine is and what it means to be a man.

I think some of this works and some of it doesn’t. The subverting of the traditional menswear pieces like the blazer really works as it’s clearly a man’s blazer but given more feminine attributes. However, the pleated trousers and lace blouses to me just look like womenswear. The concept is there but I think it needs a much deeper and slightly more meaningful exploration. However, as standalone pieces they are absolutely beautiful.

It’s A love story between Eros and a boy. My collection was inspired by a quote from Anna Wintour, “Everything is for everybody.” We both believe that men and women should not have separate rules.

Man has historically been defined by “masculinity” through society expectation of what constitutes masculine, strength and power. These imposed definitions become the way men understand fashion. Judgment, bias and social pressure inform the appropriateness of a man’s wardrobe.
