Let your feelings bloom

With everything going on in the world today, I often think that I’m glad not to be a young person now.

Our younger lives seemed infinitely more innocent and carefree. Without social media pressure, technology, the seemingly never ending hyper sexualisation of everything along with the insidious cult of ‘celebrity’

However having said all of that, young people today have a much greater awareness and vocabulary for so many things we were almost unaware of - Gender, Mental Health, Borderline Personality Disorder, Neurodivergence of all kinds.

We had very limited exposure to conversations about these things. Today’s generations however are much more informed and willing and able to discuss and deal with these matters.

That was why I was so intrigued but the concept behind the Anemone lamp by industrial designer Clara Chanteloup

The lamp is one of twenty design projects which are part of the school show by L'École de design Nantes Atlantique students.

Manic-depressive psychosis, or bipolarity, is an incurable psychological illness. It affects the brain, causing deregulation of emotions and extreme behaviour. People who suffer from it go through periods called manic and depressive phases.

"Anemone is a connected lamp with a mobile application that analyzes the development of the disorder. It predicts the onset of these phases thanks to the smartphone's behavioural measures and sensors installed in the home.

"Its petals unfurl in the manic phase and close in the depressive phase. A true tool for self-knowledge, it facilitates therapeutic follow-up and reduces the likelihood of relapses."

It’s so encouraging to see young designers think and create products that help with mental health.

So many people struggle with things that you can’t see on the surface. Which is why we should always take the time to be kind.

It takes a village…
