the charm of the cinemagraph...
You learn something new every day.
On Sunday ,thanks to the lovely Clare and the team at Coggles Sunday Supplement I learned about "cinemagraphs"
A Cinemagraph is an image that contains within itself a living moment that allows a glimpse of time to be experienced and preserved endlessly.
Visual Graphics Artist Kevin Burg began experimenting with the .gif format in this style in 2009 but it wasn't until he partnered with photographer Jamie Beck to cover NYFW that Cinemagraphs were born. Marrying original content photography with the desire to communicate more to the viewer created the cinemagraph process...
Starting in-camera, the artists take a traditional photograph and combine a living moment into the image through the isolated animation of multiple frames. To quote supermodel Coco Rocha "it's more than a photo but not quite a video
Basically it is like a super secret animated gif that lets you focus on one part of the photgraph giving you a more intimate understanding of what is going on in the photograph. What fascinates me is the emotion these seem to be able to capture...
I love this one of Bill Cunningham above. Bless him x
Kevin and Jamie are working towards creating installations, galleries and pushing the cinemagraph to embrace the digital age we live in.
For more information and to see more of their cinemagraphs visit their website here.
Their New York work is so evocative you can almost hear the cabs and smell the hot dogs and pretzels...
Wonderful just wonderful
