Grown not sewn....

Today is brought to you by the letter V.

Voylok Valenki boots made on the Volga.

This new take on these traditional felted boots is brought to us by Voylok founder Andrei Petrov.

Traditionally made and worn by families in the North, Voylok boots are basically made with wool and hot water. There are no seams or stitches, no dyes and therefore no waste. These boots are grown not sewn.

The authentic techniques used to create Voyloks have been passed down for generations in Russia, and take up to a year for their local craftspeople to master.

Creating boots by hand in two small workshops, one along the Kostroma River and the other on the Volga, it is their goal to employ these artisans year-round – allowing them to provide for their families, while doing something they enjoy.

This factory only produces 80 pairs of this boot per week – with each pair taking a full five days to craft by hand.

Each pair of felted boots, the Kostromo Classic, comes with a rubber overshoe that can be slipped on and off, making Voyloks suitable for both indoor and outdoor wear.  Without the rubber overshoe, they work as slippers that have thermoregulating properties.
The first batch of Voyloks will be available online starting today February 15.

There will be approximately 400 pairs available across two colorways, light grey with a red or black overshoe. Voyloks retail for £195 and you should have these boots for many years to come.

As I type this the sleet is battering the window. I’m thinking a pair of these would be very welcome here in The Kingdom.
