Blown away...

Just when you think Iris van Herpen can’t amaze you any more along comes this -

The Dimensionism dress, fully blown from glass.

Working in collaboration again with Bernd Weinmayer they have created a unique dress made of glass by using a combination of two original techniques: glass blowing and glass fusing. The resulting dress shot by David Uzochukwu will have you marvelling at the glorious creativity of all involved.

Just watch this the video below and prepare to be amazed…

Iris and Bernd previously worked together on commissioned work where Van Herpen took great inspiration from Bernd’s exceptional craftsmanship and willingness to experiment. “His methods of work manifested great synergy and compatibility with the vision of the brand”, says Van Herpen, who also share similar core values when it comes to sustainability.

The dress made of heat-resistant borosilicate glass “Simax” commonly used in the production of scientific laboratory glass, weighs approximately seven kilos and is formed into the desired shape as a rod or hollow tubular glass freely by hand. A wide variety of profile shapes were created with the aid of simple graphite hand tools and by using special techniques such as pulling, pressing, blowing and sucking.

This is Iris’ second collaboration with the Austrian-Nigerian self-taught visual artist David Uzochukwu. Van Herpen and Uzochukwu previously worked together, when he captured her Sensory Seas collection. His practice now looks more broadly at notions of strength, resilience and belonging, expressed through digitally reconfigured landscapes and the idea of the surreal, perfect to echo Iris’ work, and made him the perfect fit to photograph this project..
