Mission to Mars...
Today I'd like to talk about Mars Black.
Not the pigment but the “UK Paint Whisperer” Steve Smith
I can’t really tell you much about him, other than the fact that he was born in Macclesfield in 1975 and his work makes me laugh and cry. He works with acrylic on canvas on a small but precious scale with lots of his work being only 6 x 8 inches.
The titles he gives to each piece of work are so spot on, they are almost surgical in their ability to cut straight through to your funny bone or your heart, often both at the same time.
I NO LONGER WISH TO CONTINUE WITH THIS CHARADE
THIS UNIVERSE CAN DO WHATEVER THE FUCK IT FEELS LIKE
WE DECIDED TO UNFUCK IT, BUT IT WAS FAR TOO LATE
ALTHOUGH THE INTELLIGENCE WAS ARTIFICIAL, THE EMOTION WAS REAL
EVEN NOW, I CAN STILL HEAR YOUR WORDS AS THEY SWELL AND CRASH INTO MY MIND
AND THEN YOU WERE GONE
You can see his latest creation on instagram .His work sells out immediately but you can buy prints of it here
As I type this, is dawns on me that in a very strange way ( minus the surreal elements and comedy) his work reminds me of the solitude and emptiness that exists in my favourite Edward Hopper paintings, like Seven A.M which I look at every day as I descend the stairs…
